About Yokachō Old Street
In the charming town of Monzen, admire the Inami Carving, designated as a national traditional craft.
Details
The streets of Inami, recognized as a Japanese heritage site and known as the capital of wood carving, are lined with numerous carving workshops along the stone-paved road leading to the Jodo Shinshu Otani sect's Inami Betsuin Zuisei Temple. Traditional craftsmanship techniques and aesthetics are scattered everywhere, from wooden nameplates to signs, adding a touch of elegance to the stroll.
Zuisei Temple, founded in the first year of Meitoku (1390) by the fifth generation of Hongwanji, Shōnyū, serves as the center of Jodo Shinshu faith in the Hokuriku region. Over time, the temple revitalized the town, becoming the heart of Inami, the capital of wood carving, and marking a profound and enduring history. The old street of Yoidamachi has also been selected as one of the "100 Scenic Views of Japan to Preserve" by the Ministry of the Environment, symbolizing the town of Inami. Here, one can hear the sound of wooden mallets coming from the workshops, creating a sense of calm and relaxation. Nearby, there are galleries showcasing the works of craft artists, cafes, and local cuisine, as well as delicious handmade soba noodles.
