About Yumenoshima Park (夢の島公園)
An urban oasis with abundant facilities and lush greenery.
Details
The Yumenoshima area is a landfill surrounded by canals and waterways in Koto City, Tokyo, with most of its area taken up by Yumenoshima Park. Originally the Tokyo Bay Garbage Dump, it was repurposed and opened as a park in 1978.
Covering approximately 430,000 square meters, the park features various sports facilities, including an athletics field, barbecue areas, and the multifunctional sports and cultural facility "BumB Tokyo Sports Culture Hall," as well as a tropical plant conservatory and an archery range.
The park is lush with greenery, featuring eucalyptus trees, royal poinciana, and Canary Island date palms, along with seasonal flowers such as narcissus, camellias, osmanthus, and rapeseed blooming throughout the year.
The "Tokyo Yumenoshima Tropical Plant Conservatory," characterized by its three interconnected semi-circular glass domes, is a striking sight. The heating and cooling for the conservatory are powered by residual heat from the new Koto Cleaning Plant adjacent to Yumenoshima Park. Inside, visitors can view landscapes of tropical waterside environments, tropical houses, and plants from the Ogasawara Islands, which are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Highlights
The sports park was transformed from a landfill site. The "Dream Island Tropical Botanical Garden" showcases precious tropical and subtropical plants and landscapes.
