About Yunishigawa Onsen
A hot spring area rich in the "Taira Clan Legends," full of charm and elegance.
Details
The natural hot springs that flow along the banks of the Yuzawa River in the deep mountains of Nikko. The spring water is a weakly alkaline simple spring, colorless and transparent, with a gentle touch on the skin. This hot spring has a long history, with local legends of the defeated Taira clan refugees from the Battle of Dan-no-ura discovering the hot springs that emerged by the riverbank to treat their wounds. Along the clear river, inns and private homes line the banks, forming a charming hot spring street.
Not only is the spring abundant, but the unique local cuisine of Yuzawa River is also a major attraction. You can enjoy local dishes made with river fish such as iwana (rock trout) and sakura masu (cherry salmon), as well as seasonal ingredients like mountain vegetables and mushrooms. Some inns even occasionally offer delicacies like bear, deer, and salamander. Additionally, the traditional dish of slow-roasting miso on wooden spoons in a sunken hearth is also renowned.
From late January to late February, the "Yuzawa Onsen Snow Hut Festival" is held. Small snow huts adorned with candles line the riverbank, creating an incredibly dreamy landscape.
