About Yunotsu Onsen

Enjoy the hot springs in a small town filled with historical charm and a vibrant atmosphere.

Details

In the late 16th century, the hot spring area that prospered due to the export port of the silver mines at Iwami Ginzan provided healing for the miners and hot spring visitors. Since the Edo period, the land divisions have remained unchanged, resulting in a town filled with buildings from the Edo, Taisho, Meiji, and Showa eras. It is the first hot spring area in Japan to be designated as an Important Traditional Building Preservation District. Additionally, it is one of the cultural heritage sites that make up the World Heritage Site "Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape." The Yunotsu Onsen area also features public baths. The spring water is a sodium chloride spring known for its excellent heat retention and moisturizing properties, rich in minerals, and said to have various benefits. It is recommended to stay overnight at a hot spring inn and leisurely enjoy the baths. Yunotsu is also known as a famous ceramic town, where you can participate in pottery experiences at the largest climbing kiln in Japan, the "Yunotsu Ceramic Town & Ceramic Museum." At the Ryugojima Shrine, you can watch the local traditional performing art "Iwami Kagura" during the night performances. Near Yunotsu Station, at "Kobayashi Workshop," there are also experiences for painting Kagura masks, allowing you to fully enjoy the pleasures of strolling through the streets of Yunotsu.
