About Zao Onsen Large Outdoor Bath
Enjoy the rich natural surroundings of Zao Onsen in the open-air bath by the stream.
Details
Zao Onsen has a history of over 1,900 years and is one of Japan's most renowned hot springs. Known as the "Beauty Hot Spring," Zao Onsen is one of the few strongly acidic hot springs in the country, capable of removing grease from the skin without the need for vigorous scrubbing, leaving it fair and clean; and here you can easily enjoy the open-air baths.
Passing through a uniquely designed gate and descending the stairs, you will find an open-air bath made of natural rocks, standing along the riverbank. The spacious bath can accommodate up to 200 people at once, allowing bathers to enjoy the soothing sounds of the flowing stream and the gentle chirping of wild birds, creating a sense of openness. You can appreciate the fresh greenery in summer and the autumn leaves while leisurely enjoying the pleasure of soaking in the hot spring. Both the men's and women's open-air baths have two levels, allowing you to choose the temperature of the hot spring according to your preference.
The strongly acidic spring has excellent effects, but due to its high acidity, there are several details to be mindful of. Contact with the eyes can cause significant irritation, and of course, it should not be ingested. The strong acidity can cause precious metals to corrode and tarnish, so be sure to remove watches and jewelry before bathing. To avoid damaging your clothing, it is also important to thoroughly dry your body after bathing. After soaking, take a moment to relax in the attached resting area. Enjoy a refreshing juice or beer, and you can also taste the locally famous konjac balls.
