The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, operates under the concept of an "open museum." Since its opening in 2004, it has sparked popular discussions by subverting traditional notions of museums through its display methods. It serves as a hub for promoting the idea of "Kanazawa = Art," enjoying top-tier popularity in Japan. Visitors can experience many innovative ways of viewing art, such as artworks that capture light projected from a perforated ceiling, a transparent glass installation filled with water in the garden that resembles a swimming pool with someone moving inside, and pieces that can be viewed from below, all showcasing contemporary art that embodies the style of "creating new value." The uniquely styled building, designed by SANAA, embodies the concept of an "open museum as a city park." Rather than a frontal approach, it features a circular structure that expands horizontally towards the city, utilizing a large amount of glass to create a design that allows for a wonderful sense of connection between different spaces. Inside, the museum is divided into an interaction area and an exhibition area, with free access to the design gallery, theater, library, and some permanent exhibits. The exhibition area regularly hosts various themed exhibitions.

Not only can you see with your eyes, but there are also entirely new ways to experience art. The works in the communication area are free to view. Wheelchairs and baby strollers are available for loan, and there are multi-functional restrooms.
