In winter, Abashiri resembles another world. From late January to late March, the Sea of Okhotsk is covered with drift ice. Taking the drift ice sightseeing icebreaker "Aurora," travelers can closely observe this marvelous and dreamlike scenery. During the approximately one-hour boat ride, passengers can comfortably enjoy the drift ice from the heated interior of the ship. On the first floor, there are free seating options by the sea with sofa seats for close viewing, or you can admire the beauty of the drift ice from the side deck closest to the water. The second floor features spacious special cabins, which are designated seats for the first 50 passengers of the day. For those seeking a dynamic experience, it is recommended to head to the observation deck. Here, you can fully experience the sound and impact of the ship cutting through the drift ice, making it a thrilling viewing spot. If you're lucky, you might even see seals lounging on the drift ice and wildlife such as Steller's sea eagles resting. Inside the ship, there is also a coffee lounge area and a shop where you can purchase souvenirs.
