The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge, which connects Honshu and Awaji Island, is 3,911 meters long and is known worldwide as the longest suspension bridge. The distance between the two main towers is 1,991 meters, and it connects with the Ōnaruto Bridge, linking the Kansai and Shikoku regions, making it a popular sightseeing route for self-driving travelers. Maiko Park in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, serves as the gateway to the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge. The "Maiko Marine Promenade," a circular walkway set at a height of about 47 meters above sea level and 317 meters long, is also a must-see attraction. Additionally, at the adjacent "Bridge Science Museum," visitors can learn about the world-class bridge construction technology through exhibits centered on the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge and the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project. The Akashi Kaikyō Bridge is nicknamed the "Pearl Bridge" because it resembles a string of giant pearls floating on the sea when illuminated at night. The nighttime lighting consists of 28 basic patterns, and special nighttime illuminations are also implemented during special events. It is worth mentioning that if you apply in advance for the "Akashi Kaikyō Bridge Tower Top Experience," you can enjoy a panoramic view from the main tower, which is about 300 meters high. This is a rare experience, so if you have the opportunity, be sure to try climbing the tower (this activity was suspended in 2021).
