Akiu Onsen is a hot spring town located along the banks of the Natori River Valley in the western part of Sendai City, offering a range of accommodations from luxury hotels to budget lodgings. It is easily accessible, just a 30-minute drive from downtown Sendai, making transportation quite convenient. There are many recreational activity spots nearby. In the upper reaches of the Natori River, the Nikko Gorge offers outdoor activities such as hiking, canyoning, and camping.
The exact year Akiu Onsen was established is unknown, but it has a long history, having been mentioned in both the "Kokin Wakashu" and "Shin Kokin Wakashu." The spring water is sodium chloride, known for being low in irritation and gentle. It has various therapeutic effects, particularly effective for skin-related ailments. According to historical records, Emperor Kinmei was cured of a skin disease after using the hot spring water from Akiu, making it one of the "Three Great Hot Springs of Japan."
About a 15-minute drive from the hot spring area is the "Akiu Great Falls," which boasts a spectacular drop of 55 meters and is worth a visit. It has been selected as one of the "One Hundred Waterfalls of Japan." The natural beauty of the changing seasons, from the fresh green buds of early summer to the autumn leaves and the ink wash painting-like winter scenery, is truly breathtaking. Visitors can enjoy the view from the observation deck or walk down to the area near the base of the waterfall for a dynamic view of the falls. The path to the base of the waterfall is not well-maintained, so it is recommended to wear comfortable sports shoes.
