About Akiyoshidai / Akiyoshido
Japan's largest karst plateau.
Details
Akiyoshidai is located in the central eastern part of Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and is Japan's largest limestone plateau. About 300 million years ago, coral reefs in a warm sea formed limestone as tectonic plates moved over the years, accumulating on land to create the present-day Akiyoshidai. The white limestone exposed through the grasslands is a spectacular sight not to be missed.
Beneath Akiyoshidai lies a network of limestone caves. Notable among them are the specially designated natural monument "Akiyoshodō," the "Kagekiyōdō," which was once a hiding place for the defeated Taira clan warriors, and the "Taishōdō," which resembles a three-dimensional maze, with over 450 caves in total. Experience a true sense of adventure in this unique otherworldly space.
Other attractions include the "Karst Road" that runs through the entire grassland, the "Akiyoshidai Karst Observatory" that overlooks the plateau area, and the Mine Akiyoshidai Geopark Center "Karstar," which serves as both a tourist information center and a resting space.
You can fully enjoy hiking and cave exploration while experiencing the mysteries of nature shaped by geological activities both above and below the ground.
