About Amagoya's Sea Hut
Current ama divers are still active here. You can experience activities where you can chat casually with the ama and enjoy tasting Shima seafood to your heart's content.
Details
The Ama Hut is a place where ama (female divers) rest with their partners after delivering their catch to the market and completing the cleaning of their tools, allowing them to warm up their bodies.
The Ama Hut experience includes tasting freshly harvested clams and sea snails grilled over charcoal while chatting casually with the ama. The ama catch shellfish such as abalone, sea snails, and sea urchins through free diving, as well as harvesting seaweed like kelp sprouts and sea lettuce. The tradition of ama has a long history, continuing from 3,000 to 5,000 years ago to the present day. They have preserved unique customs and Shinto rituals, along with protective charms like star-shaped symbols (sēman) and checkered patterns (dōman).
Modern ama wear diving masks and wetsuits, using special tools called "NOMI" to collect abalone and sea snails underwater. The number of ama has been decreasing each year, but the skills of free diving, the ability to find fishing grounds, and the historical connection with Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine) continue to be passed down as part of "ama culture."
The Ama Hut experience facility, called Umian, consists of three ama huts, accommodating a maximum of 77 guests. It adopts an individual reception method for guests rather than accommodating groups.
Highlights
You can taste the fresh seafood harvested locally. You can directly ask the ama (海女) about various aspects of ama culture and knowledge. Reservations for the date and choice of experience plan are required in advance.
