About Amanohashidate
On the approximately 3.6-kilometer-long sandbar, about 5,000 tall and lush pine trees grow, making it one of the "Three Scenic Views of Japan" (日本三景).
Details
Takahashi-dai in Kyoto Prefecture is a sandbar formed by the pushing of the Earth's crust, and it is known alongside Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture as one of Japan's "Three Scenic Views." The sandbar stretches approximately 3.6 kilometers long and varies in width from about 20 to 170 meters, home to around 5,000 tall and lush pine trees. This mysterious landscape, created by nature over thousands of years, has been selected for many "Japan's Top 100" lists, including the Top 100 Famous Pines in Japan, the Top 100 White Sand and Green Pine Beaches in Japan, the Top 100 Beaches in Japan, and the Top 100 Beautiful Historical Landscapes in Japan, making it a must-visit spot when in Kyoto.
Takahashi-dai extends across the Aso Sea from Miyazu Bay, and has been metaphorically described as a flying dragon ascending to the heavens since ancient times. There are three observation decks nearby that offer stunning views of its beautiful form. From "Kasamatsu Park," the northern side of Takahashi-dai resembles a flying dragon, earning it the name "Shoryu View." Bending down to look through your legs at the inverted sky and sea is a breathtaking sight; from "Takahashi-dai View Land," you can enjoy the "Flying Dragon View," which looks like a blue dragon soaring into the sky; and from the "Takahashi-dai Sesshu Observation Deck," you can see a straight view resembling the character "一," which is truly impressive.
Takahashi-dai is also home to historical sites such as the monument of Emperor Showa's poem, the song monument of Yosano Tekkan and his wife Akiko, and the Takahashi-dai Shrine, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll in the park. You can rent bicycles or enjoy the scenery from sightseeing boats and beaches, experiencing the beauty of Takahashi-dai in your preferred way.
In particular, the "Rotary Bridge," which connects Takahashi-dai to the mainland and allows boats to rotate 90 degrees as they pass, is definitely worth seeing. Additionally, there are many souvenir shops lining the main street from Takahashi-dai Station that you can visit. From July to November each year, the "Light Atelier" is held around Takahashi-dai, featuring performances of light and art. There are also fireworks displays and nighttime cruises, which are quite worth seeing as well.

The scenery viewed from the observation deck is known as "昇龍観" (Shōryūkan) and "飛龍観" (Hiryūkan). The park contains several historical sites that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. After reaching the observation deck, remember to turn your body and look back through your legs to capture the view of Amanohashidate upside down. The "回旋橋" (Kaisenbashi), which connects the land, is also a must-see attraction. The light and art event "光のAtelier" (Hikari no Atelier) has also garnered significant attention.
