About Asahikawa Design Center

Like an art museum! The historic Asahikawa Furniture Dissemination Base.

Details

Asahikawa City is one of Japan's leading producers of wooden furniture. The "Asahikawa Design Center" features around 30 permanent showrooms belonging to manufacturers affiliated with the Asahikawa Furniture Industry Cooperative, showcasing and selling Asahikawa's furniture and various wooden crafts. Rather than simply being a furniture store, the Asahikawa Design Center feels more like an art museum. The high design quality and variety of wooden furniture evoke admiration and emotion for the traditional woodworking skills. In addition to traditional furniture meticulously crafted from local timber, there are also diverse designs that have stood out in international furniture design competitions, making the array of products a visual delight. Various designed furniture and wooden crafts can be viewed and touched before making a purchase. The center also features a café where you can enjoy authentic Taiwanese cuisine during lunch hours, along with a menu of Chinese tea and Taiwanese Kung Fu tea, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy tea after shopping. The interior decor is a collaborative effort between young furniture designers and local residents, creating a top-notch fashionable space in Asahikawa City. Visiting during afternoon tea time to enjoy a moment of tranquility is highly recommended.

Highlights

In Asahikawa, one of the few wooden furniture production areas in Japan, there are about 30 permanent showrooms belonging to manufacturers of the Asahikawa Furniture Industry Cooperative, showcasing and selling Asahikawa furniture and woodworking crafts. The seasonal exhibitions, which change every six months, are quite eye-catching and are loved by visitors for their engaging content. It is not just a simple furniture store; the experience is akin to being in an art museum, which has received high praise. In 2023, further renovations were made, adding an "experiential workshop" and a "history zone of Asahikawa furniture," transforming it into a cultural facility that spreads the charm of Asahikawa furniture. There is also a café on-site where you can enjoy refined meals during lunch and afternoon tea.
