About Asahikawa Rice Field Art
An enormous colorful artwork stretches endlessly across the countryside, impossible to take in at a glance!
Details
The giant painted pattern "Asahikawa Rice Field Art," which is 40 meters high and 170 meters wide, is a magical landscape that appears in the summer rice fields. This artwork is led by the Youth Division of the Taisetsu Agricultural Cooperative, using the rice fields in Higashi-Takasu, Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, as a canvas, creating a masterpiece with the different colors of rice leaves. Each year features a specific theme, depicting cute patterns of animals or characters related to the local area.
Using only six colors of rice leaves—green, yellow, purple, red, orange, and white—this artwork showcases stunning and vivid contrasts. During the best viewing period from mid-July to mid-August, visitors can climb up to the 8-meter-high observation deck to take in the rice field art along with the pastoral scenery and majestic mountains. Due to its large size, it is challenging to capture the entire artwork in a single photo, but no matter where you take a picture from, you can capture stunning images.
The first floor of the observation deck (viewing platform) features a sales area where you can purchase fresh local agricultural products and processed foods. In the summer, delicious, refreshing ice cream is also available.
