About Atomic Bomb Dome
Standing in the memorial park that houses the Peace Bell, this precious building conveys the horrors of the atomic bombing to future generations.
Details
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was originally known as the "Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall," designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel and completed on April 5, 1915. Due to its proximity to the epicenter of the explosion, just 160 meters away, the entire building suffered near-total destruction. Today, the exposed steel and the remnants of the structure still preserve the state it was in after the atomic bomb was dropped, making it a precious building that conveys the tragic history of the atomic bombing to future generations.
It is unclear when this building began to be referred to as the "Genbaku Dome." The interior of the building is not open to the public, and visitors can only tour the exterior. When illuminated at night, the Genbaku Dome takes on a serene and fantastical atmosphere, offering a different view than during the day. Within the Peace Memorial Park where the Genbaku Dome is located, there are many monuments dedicated to praying for world peace, memorials for the victims, and related facilities, including the "Peace Bell," the "Children's Peace Monument," and the "Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum."
Nearby the Peace Memorial Park stands a 13-story complex known as the "Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims." From the observation deck on the roof of the Cenotaph, one can overlook the Genbaku Dome, or take a sightseeing boat to view this building, which witnessed the horrors of the atomic bombing from different angles.
