🗺️ Beppu Onsen

📝 Introduction

The hot spring town with the highest number of hot springs and the largest amount of spring water flow in Japan.

📖 Details

Beppu Onsen is a collective term for the various hot springs located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. It boasts 2,847 hot spring sources, with a daily water output of over 130,000 tons, making it the largest in Japan. Beppu Onsen is divided into eight areas, which is why it is also referred to as Beppu Hattō or Beppu Onsen Town. Each hot spring has its own unique water quality and color, making it perfect for a hot spring tour. Another highlight of Beppu Onsen is the famous Hell Hot Springs (Jigoku Onsen). They are called "Hell" because the steam and unusual scenery created by the high-temperature water gushing from the ground evoke a terrifying atmosphere reminiscent of hell. The "Beppu Hell Tour," centered around the Tetsuwan Onsen, is particularly popular, allowing visitors to explore seven different hot springs, each with its own unique scenery. Among the seven Hell hot springs, the Umi Jigoku, Chinoike Jigoku, Ryūkyū Jigoku, and Shiraike Jigoku are designated as national scenic spots. There are over 150 "public baths" open to local residents in the hot spring town. The bathing fees are quite affordable, ranging from 100 to 200 yen, and tourists can also use them freely.
