About Byodoin
A masterpiece of perfect symmetry! The hall, reminiscent of the Pure Land, is captivating.
Details
Byodoin was originally a villa of the powerful Fujiwara no Michinaga during the Heian period (794–1185). After his son, Yorimichi, inherited it, it was converted into a temple in 1052. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1994. After renovations in 2014, it now closely resembles its original form, with the Amida Hall, which houses the principal image of Amida Nyorai, being a must-see attraction. Its magnificent and symmetrical design captivates all who see it. The idea of praying for rebirth in the Pure Land was very popular at the time of its creation, which is why it was built to resemble a palace in the Pure Land. From the front, it looks like a bird spreading its wings, with a pair of phoenixes atop the roof, and it has been known as "Hōōdō" (Phoenix Hall) since the Edo period. It is currently designated as a national treasure.
Within Byodoin, the "Byodoin Museum Hoshokan" showcases many treasures preserved at Byodoin, such as the bronze bell, phoenix, and the statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon in the clouds. Additionally, visitors can see the colorful decorations of the interior of the Phoenix Hall presented through the latest digital technology.
Byodoin also features a Japanese tea specialty shop called "Sabō Fujika," where you can enjoy matcha or sencha paired with traditional Japanese sweets. Since the area where Byodoin is located is known as "Uji Tea Production Area," the tea shop also offers a "Byodoin Limited Original Flavor" made with Uji tea leaves. It is recommended to enjoy a cup of Uji tea that can only be tasted in this special place.
At Byodoin, you can also experience the natural beauty of the changing seasons, such as cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. Notably, from late April to early May each year, around 10,000 wisteria flowers bloom, attracting many visitors to this famous wisteria site.
Highlights
The Phoenix Hall, dedicated to Amida Buddha, is a must-see for its symmetrical beauty. At the "Byodoin Museum," you can see many national treasures at once, making it a truly precious experience. Inside the temple grounds, the "Teahouse Wisteria" offers a chance to taste original flavors of Uji tea. The cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves showcase the natural beauty of the four seasons, and the wisteria flowers that bloom from late April to early May are also worth seeing.
