About Cape Soya
The distant Sakhalin Island can be seen, which is the northernmost cape of the Japanese mainland.
Details
Cape Soya is the northernmost point of Japan's main islands. Standing at 45 degrees, 31 minutes, and 22 seconds north, the "Northernmost Point Monument of Japan" at the tip of Cape Soya is the best spot for photos. This triangular pyramid-shaped monument is designed with a peak symbolizing the North Star, which represents the northern region, while the circular base symbolizes peace and harmony.
In front of the northernmost point of Japan's main islands stands a statue of Mamiya Rinzō, who discovered that Sakhalin Island is an island and identified the Mamiya Strait between Sakhalin and the Eurasian continent. On clear days, one can see the distant silhouette of Sakhalin Island, and in winter, drift ice may even float by. The stable summer climate is the most popular tourist season, but there are also many visitors during the harsh winter.
It is particularly worth mentioning that nearby souvenir shops sell a "Certificate of Arrival at the Northernmost Point of Japan," marked with the date and time. It is recommended to buy one as a memento during your visit. There are also exciting attractions nearby, such as the Soya Hills and Cape Soya Park, which can be explored together.
