About Chion-in Yōzen-in
Located within the grounds of Chion-in, this famous garden consists of a pond garden and a dry landscape garden.
Details
"Chion-in" is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, built on land deeply connected to its founder, Honen Shonin. The Yosen-en garden within the temple grounds was renovated and landscaped in 1954 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Miyazaki Yosen, the pioneer of Yosen dyeing and a painter from the mid-Edo period. It consists of a pond-and-stream style garden fed by the Higashiyama spring and a dry landscape garden known as "Rokuyōen."
Within Yosen-en, there is the tea room "Karoku-an," which was relocated from the residence of the famous Kyoto businessman Okazawa Tokutaro, and the tea room "Hakuju-an," which was moved to commemorate the 86th abbot of the temple, Nakamura Yasutaka. These two tea rooms, associated with the Urasenke school, allow visitors to better appreciate the charm of the renowned garden.
Next to the garden is the national treasure Sanmon gate, with koi swimming in the pond, and highlights such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves. In addition to the nationally designated scenic Hojo garden (with a separate admission fee and a common ticket available), Chion-in also features several structures designated as national treasures and important cultural properties, making it highly recommended to visit them all.
