An aquarium in Hokkaido featuring a large freshwater tank. It showcases around 10,000 species of organisms, starting with salmon inhabiting the Chitose River, and introduces freshwater fish ecology in a clear and understandable way. The highlight is Japan's first "Underwater Observation Area," where visitors can observe the real river (Chitose River) through glass. In March, you can see juvenile salmon, in June, the Hakone three-toothed char and cherry salmon, and from late August to winter, you can get a close look at salmon returning to spawn. The Aqua Touch Pool, where you can interact with juvenile sturgeon and Hakone three-toothed char, as well as experiences with surgeonfish, is also quite popular. Don't miss the large tank that recreates the vividly beautiful lake bottom of Lake Shikotsu, known for its blue color. In addition to the "Koi Feeding Experience" and "Behind-the-Scenes Tour" that require advance reservations, there are various interesting experiential activities held throughout the seasons, such as the "Salmon Fry Release Experience" from March to May, the "Summer Project Exhibition" in summer, and the "Salmon Egg Collection Experience" in September (all activities conducted in Japanese).
