About Chuzenji Lake
The highest lake in Japan offers the enjoyment of the changing scenery of the four seasons.
Details
Chūzenji Lake is said to have been formed over 20,000 years ago when a volcanic eruption from Mount Nantai blocked the valley with lava, creating a dammed lake. Located at an elevation of 1,269 meters, it is one of the highest lakes in Japan. The lakeside, stretching at the foot of Mount Nantai, is beautifully serene and picturesque, showcasing various natural sceneries that change with the seasons. The rhododendrons in early summer and the autumn foliage are particularly stunning. Additionally, the pink, white, and red petals of the Kyu-rin-sō, which bloom around June at Senju no Hama, are also very famous, attracting many visitors with its mysterious landscape.
Walking around the lake is a great option, and taking a sightseeing boat to enjoy the views from the water is highly recommended. Especially during the autumn foliage season, there are special "Autumn Foliage Tours" available.
Along the shores of Chūzenji Lake, there are many large hotels and Japanese inns, making accommodation very convenient. Moreover, nearby attractions such as the Futarasan Shrine Chūgū, Tachiki Kannon, Kagen Falls, Ryūtō Falls, and the Battlefield Plain are also very appealing in the Oku-Nikkō area.
Highlights
The highest lake in Japan remains relatively cool even in summer. The breathtaking autumn foliage spreads out during the fall. During the autumn leaf season, the sightseeing boat "Koyo Tour" operates irregularly. There are also campgrounds and small boat rentals, making it a great place to enjoy outdoor recreational activities.
