About Daigo-ji

With a history of over 1,100 years, it is one of the largest temples in Kyoto. It is also a famous cherry blossom viewing spot with deep connections to Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Details

Daigo-ji was founded in 874 (the 16th year of the Jōgan era) during the early Heian period by the disciple of Kōbō Daishi Kūkai, Master Shōhō. It serves as the head temple of the Shingon sect's Daigo branch, which is the highest-ranking temple of this sect. The temple grounds cover the entire Daigo Mountain, spanning 2 million tsubo, making it the largest area within Kyoto city. The site is divided into "Upper Daigo" on the mountain and "Lower Daigo" at the foot of the mountain, housing over 80 halls and pagodas. At the time of its establishment, development centered around "Upper Daigo." Later, due to the devout faith of the emperor, it was designated as the temple of Emperor Daigo, and a grand garan (a common term for a temple hall) was established at the foot of the mountain. This ancient temple, with a history of over 1,100 years, preserves a wealth of temple treasures, including wooden cultural properties such as hall and pagoda architecture and Buddhist statue carvings, as well as paper cultural properties like scriptures, documents, and paintings. Many of these have been designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, totaling over 75,000 items. In 1994, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of "The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." Additionally, Daigo-ji has long been known as "Hanano Daigo," a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. During the era of pacification and unification under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, approximately 700 cherry trees were transplanted here from across the country. In the spring of 1598 (the 3rd year of the Keichō era), the most famous cherry blossom viewing party in Japanese history, the "Daigo Hanami," was held at Daigo-ji. Originating from this story, an annual cherry blossom event called "Toyotaka's Hanami Procession" is held on the second Sunday of April, attracting numerous visitors and creating a lively atmosphere.
