About Daikanbo Peak
You can fully enjoy the 360-degree panoramic view of Aso.
Details
Mount Aso refers to the volcanic group, including the frequently active Aso Five Peaks, formed in a caldera (collapsed volcanic crater) due to four major volcanic eruptions that occurred approximately 270,000 to 90,000 years ago. Within the caldera, there are railways, and around 50,000 residents live in the three municipalities of Aso City, Takamori Town, and Minami Aso Village, making it the largest volcanic area in the world.
Daikanbo is located on the northern edge of the caldera (outer rim) and serves as a viewpoint for the vast collapsed terrain. From an elevation of 936 meters, one can see the expansive fields of Aso Town, the Aso Five Peaks, and the Kuju mountain range all at once. The Aso Five Peaks, viewed from this spot, resemble the reclining figure of Shakyamuni Buddha, which is why they are also referred to as the "Nirvana Statue." Additionally, during the mornings from autumn to winter, one can overlook the mysterious landscape of Aso amidst a vast sea of clouds.
It is said that it was originally called "Toji no Hana" (Far Sight Peak) due to its prominent topography, but later, inspired by the breathtaking scenery, the literary figure Tokutomi Roka named it Daikanbo.
Highlights
The observation platform offers a panoramic view of the Aso caldera from the outer mountain range. The ridgeline of the Aso Five Mountains is known as the "reclining posture of Shakyamuni Buddha." It is a famous spot for astronomical observations. In the mornings from autumn to winter, you can also see a sea of clouds.
