Daisetsuzan is located in the central region of Hokkaido and is composed of eight volcanic groups, earning it the title of "Playground of the Gods." One of its peaks is Kurodake, which stands at an elevation of 1,984 meters. In spring and summer, visitors can experience high-altitude plants and observe wildlife such as Siberian chipmunks, as well as enjoy hiking activities. In autumn, the beautiful red maple leaves can be admired, and in winter, skiing and snowshoeing are available, offering different pleasures throughout the year.
By taking the "Sounkyo Kurodake Ropeway" and the "Kurodake Pair Lift," located at the foot of the Sounkyo Onsen area, you can easily ascend to the seventh station of Kurodake. This makes it a popular spot for beginner hikers and tourists, as it allows for a light and easy journey.
Additionally, the winter skiing activities are particularly popular, with a long season running from early November to mid-May. Approximately half of the year can be enjoyed with skiing activities. The peak times are especially from November to December when the snow season begins, and from March to May when the warmer spring skiing conditions are most favored.
It is recommended to enjoy the hot springs at Sounkyo Onsen after hiking and skiing for a relaxing experience.
