About Dejima

At the once-thriving trading post of "Dejima," gain a glimpse of the social scene on this artificial island in the early 19th century.

Details

During Japan's period of isolation, which lasted for about 200 years, Dejima (designated as a national historic site "Dejima Dutch Trading Post") was the only place allowed to trade with the West. This fan-shaped artificial island, constructed by land reclamation in 1636, not only saw a variety of import and export products but also became a conduit for Western dietary culture, scientific knowledge, and entertainment activities such as billiards and badminton, which spread throughout Japan. In 1641, the Dutch trading post, originally located in Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture, was relocated to Dejima, which had become a trading hub. It is said that the director of the Dutch trading post, Capitan, the deputy director, Heitel, and their Southeast Asian servants once lived here. After the end of the shogunate, the island was filled in and lost its original appearance. However, restoration work on the ruins of the Dutch trading post has gradually begun. In addition to residential areas like the Capitan's room and Heitel's room, warehouses for storing import and export goods and cooking facilities have also been restored, allowing visitors to see the interiors of the rooms and exhibits of import and export goods. The Dejima Front Bridge was completed in 2017, allowing access to Dejima for the first time in 130 years. So far, restoration work on 16 buildings has been completed, and the appearance of Dejima in the early 19th century is gradually being recreated.
