About Dogo Park (Ruins of Yuzuki Castle)

The urban park that has been renovated and transformed from the national historic site "Tōzuki Castle Ruins."

Details

Dogo Park is a large urban park built on the national historic site of "Yuzuki Castle Ruins," covering an area of approximately 8.6 hectares. The entire park is situated on the castle ruins that have been preserved for nearly 250 years, dating from the early 14th century to the late 16th century. Visitors can still see remnants of the castle, such as earthen mounds and moats, and it has been designated as a national historic site under the name "Yuzuki Castle Ruins." The park features a turtle shell-shaped terrain with a diameter of about 350 meters, and a central hill that rises 30 meters high. The observation deck offers a panoramic view of Matsuyama Plain, making it a popular sightseeing spot. Today, it has transformed into a lush urban park, serving as a recreational area for citizens. From late March to early April each year, around 300 cherry blossom trees bloom in the park, and nighttime illuminations of the cherry blossoms attract many flower-viewing visitors. The park also has several highlights, including the Shiki Memorial Museum dedicated to Matsuyama-born haiku poet Masaoka Shiki, as well as the "Yuzuki Castle Museum" and samurai residences. When visiting the famous Dogo Onsen, known for being Japan's oldest hot spring, it's worth taking the time to explore this park.
