About Drum Gate & Hospitality Dome (Kanazawa Station)

It embodies a spirit of hospitality and is one of the landmark attractions representing Kanazawa.

Details

JR Kanazawa Station is the transportation gateway to Kanazawa, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen arriving and departing from here, making it a hub for tourism in the Hokuriku region, attracting a constant flow of travelers. The most striking feature at the Kenrokuen Entrance (East Exit) towards the city center is the "MOTENASHI DOME," completed in 2005, and the "Drum Gate" (Kagamimon). The Drum Gate, supported by two robust pillars, stands at an impressive height of 13.7 meters. Inspired by the drums used in Kanazawa's traditional performing art of Noh, it presents a stunning appearance. Tourists visiting Kanazawa often take commemorative photos here, making it a very popular photo spot. After sunset, a 2-minute light display occurs every hour until midnight. The lights, showcasing the traditional colors of Kanazawa used in Kaga Yuzen—known as Kaga Goshiki—change throughout the week, adding vibrant colors to the Drum Gate. The modernly designed MOTENASHI DOME is based on the concept of "the hospitality of holding an umbrella for those arriving at the station." Over 3,000 geometric glass panels cover the roof and walls, specifically designed to protect travelers from the rain and snow that Kanazawa is known for. These two carefully designed attractions have firmly established themselves as new landmarks in Kanazawa, and in 2011, Kanazawa Station was selected as one of the "Most Beautiful Stations in the World."
