About Echigo Fujiwara no Sato
A large historical theme park to experience the history and culture of the Fujiwara clan in the Ōshū region.
Details
Echizufujiwara no Sato is a large historical theme park that recreates the city of the Heian period (794 AD – 1185 AD). Covering an area of approximately 20 hectares, it allows visitors to travel back in time to the Heian period through various experiences such as viewing, playing, experiencing, tasting, and shopping, thereby understanding the history and culture of the Fujiwara clan that once ruled this area.
Within the expansive park, more than 120 buildings from the Heian period have been recreated. Among them, the "Kyaragoshō," the residence of the Oshu Fujiwara clan in Hiraizumi, is the only building in Japan that faithfully replicates the architectural style of Heian period sleeping quarters. Additionally, the park has accurately restored the "Seichō," where political meetings and important ceremonies were held, the "Kyōsei-kan" of the Tohoku samurai, the castle walls built during the Yamato court era, and the "Konjōdō," which was created at that time.
Here, visitors can wear ancient clothing and experience what it was like to be a Heian noble. There are opportunities to challenge oneself with archery and visit the "Illusion Art Hall," themed around the Heian period. Furthermore, with prior reservation, guests can enjoy a special set menu featuring dishes recreated from the Heian period.
In addition, Echizufujiwara no Sato hosts various seasonal events, including lighting ceremonies and a spectacular 3D projection show during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. From mid-June to early July, there is a firefly viewing event where visitors can see the naturally occurring Genji fireflies and Heike fireflies in the park, which is quite popular among travelers.
Highlights
The only theme park that recreates the Heian period. The dressing options to transform into Heian nobles, such as the 十二単 (juni-hitoe),束帯 (shutai), and court lady attire, are quite popular! It serves as a filming location for many television programs and movies. Numerous exciting events are held in spring and autumn.
