About Eikō-in
Offers a variety of unique experiences specific to ryokan (宿坊).
Details
The lodging located at the entrance of the "Okunoin" where the Great Master Kōbō Daishi rests is accessible by walking from the Ichinobashi bridge. The head priest is Dōshō, a disciple of Kōbō Daishi, and due to the large number of patrons, it is also known as "Eko-in." It combines tradition and history while being equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi.
Guests can freely participate in the morning "Kinhō" (chanting) in front of the Buddha and the "Hōma prayer," which involves burning offerings and incense to communicate with the heavens. They can also experience the esoteric meditation "Aji-kann," and sincerely transcribe the Heart Sutra in the "Goshakyō." Additionally, the "Okunoin Night Tour" organized by Awesome Tours is quite popular, allowing visitors to experience a solemn atmosphere different from that of the daytime.
Meals are provided in the form of "Odori Ryori," a ceremonial banquet featuring shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) that has been passed down in Kōyasan, served after rituals. Guests can enjoy a healthy meal primarily consisting of a variety of vegetables, beans, and mountain vegetables in the traditional temple atmosphere.
Highlights
Guests staying overnight can participate for free in morning rituals, goma prayers, Aji Kuan, sutra writing, and other experiential activities.
