About Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden

The historic botanical garden offers beautiful seasonal flowers to admire throughout the year.

Details

In 1882, a Japanese-Western style garden was built by Irish trader Samuel Cocking. Spanning over 10,000 square meters, the expansive area features artificial mountains, ponds, flower beds, and a greenhouse, which was said to be the largest of its kind in the Eastern region at the time. Although it was later renamed "Enoshima Botanical Garden" and "Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden," it still retains the style of the original garden. Today, the garden continues to cultivate seasonal flowers such as roses, hibiscus, and camellias, as well as precious subtropical plants and those originally planted by Samuel Cocking. Among them, approximately 10,000 colorful tulips bloom during the cold season, creating a breathtaking sight, and at night, the illuminated garden offers a dreamlike view of the tulips. After renovations in 2022, a new exhibition showcasing the greenhouse ruins and history, called the "Samuel Cocking Greenhouse Ruins," was established, along with a large play structure for children, the "Fuwafuwa Dome (ふわふわドーム)," upgrading the facilities to cater to all age groups.

Highlights

Once the largest garden site in the Eastern region, it features seasonal flowers such as roses, hibiscus, and camellias. You can also see precious subtropical plants and those that were planted when the garden first opened. In winter, around 10,000 tulips bloom, which is not to be missed. After renovations in 2022, new greenhouse structures and large playground equipment were added.
