🗺️ Former Ito Denemon Residence

📝 Introduction

Gathering the essence of Japanese architecture, the residence of the King of Kyushu Coal Mines.

📖 Details

The Chikuho region of Fukuoka Prefecture was the leading area in Japan for coal supply from the Meiji to Showa periods. The residence of the "King of Coal Mines," Ito Denemon, who rose to prominence during that time, has been preserved and is open for public viewing. The building was remodeled in 1911 when Denemon was fifty years old, to welcome his second wife, the singer Yanagihara Byakuren (who was 25 at the time). The expansive property covers 2,300 tsubo and features four residences with 25 rooms facing a Japanese garden, as well as three storehouses. Craftsmen from Kyoto were specially invited to showcase their exquisite and delicate techniques, resulting in a fireplace in the Art Nouveau style and a reception hall adorned with stained glass made in England. The residence, which blends Japanese and Western styles, is filled with artistic touches, and even the details of the design are meticulously considered. Among these, the second-floor living room created for Byakuren by Denemon stands out. It features a room with a view of the Japanese garden, paper doors covered in silver foil, a transom with only bamboo joints remaining, and a woven ceiling above the bed, all showcasing a luxurious and splendid design crafted with various thoughtful ideas. Experiencing the love story of the two during the visit to this grand residence adds a unique flavor to the experience.
