About Friend Island
An island that resembles an animated world, filled with a fantastical atmosphere.
Details
Tomonoshima is located in the Kida Strait and consists of four uninhabited islands floating in the strait: Okinoshima, Chijima, Torishima, and Kamishima. It is part of the Setonaikai National Park. Among these, the landscape of Okinoshima is remarkably similar to the scenes depicted in the famous Japanese Studio Ghibli animation "Castle in the Sky," which is why it is also referred to as "Laputa Island." Access to Tomonoshima is only possible by boat; a ferry from Kada Port in Wakayama City takes just 20 minutes to reach the island.
As early as the Meiji era (1868–1912), many places on the island served as military fortifications for the former Imperial Japanese Army, and remnants such as artillery batteries and ammunition depots from that time still exist today. Although they have gradually deteriorated due to years of erosion from wind and rain, the sturdy brick structures of the artillery batteries still evoke memories and reflections on war. The island features hiking trails that take about 2 hours and 30 minutes to circle. Strolling around the island, visitors can find many viewpoints overlooking the sea and well-placed spots that offer a healing experience amidst the lush natural surroundings.
Additionally, due to Tomonoshima's warm climate throughout the year, visitors can enjoy around 400 species of plants, including many rare varieties.
Highlights
Abandoned military fortresses and other ruins make one feel as if they have stepped into the Studio Ghibli film "Castle in the Sky." A leisurely walk around the island takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. The island is home to over 400 species of plants, showcasing its rich natural ecology.
