About Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha

Mount Fuji, a UNESCO World Heritage site, serves as the sacred object of worship and is the center of Fuji worship.

Details

The main deity is the deity of Mount Fuji, Konoha no Sakuyahime no Mikoto, and this is the head shrine of over 1,300 Asama shrines across Japan. Its origins can be traced back to 27 BC, and the current shrine was built in the first year of Daido (806). Covering approximately 17,000 tsubo, the grounds feature the "Honden," constructed in the 9th year of Keicho (1604) under the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu. This rare two-story "Asama-zukuri" building has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, along with several other highlights such as the "Romon," which is designated as a tangible cultural property of Shizuoka Prefecture. Additionally, there is an "Okumiya" built at the summit of Mount Fuji, where a regular festival is held every year on August 15. Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha is also a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot, featuring over 500 cherry trees of divine quality in the "Sakura no Baba." Among them, the weeping cherry tree "Shingen-zakura," planted by the warlord Takeda Shingen himself, is a must-see. The best time for cherry blossom viewing is from late March to early April, attracting a large number of visitors. Furthermore, there are annual events such as the Yabusame (horseback archery) on May 5 and the "Fujinomiya Matsuri," which takes place in November.
