🗺️ Fukui Prefectural Ceramic Museum

📝 Introduction

You can visit, learn, and experience making Echizen pottery at the pottery museum.

📖 Details

You can observe, learn, and actually create in a facility that embodies the essence of Echizen-yaki, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. In the museum, in addition to displaying many works, you can learn about Echizen-yaki through a visit to the three-dimensional model of the Anagama kiln from the Kamakura period, created by Mizuno Kyūemon, a pioneer in the study of ancient Echizen kilns. Echizen-yaki is a type of ceramic that is renowned alongside Seto, Tanba, Bizen, Tokoname, and Shigaraki as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. It was established around 800 years ago during the late Heian period, producing items such as jars and grinding bowls. Many pottery kilns have closed down over the years, but after the war, it began to attract attention again. The construction of the Echizen Pottery Village has drawn numerous potters from across the country, and new works that continue the tradition are now being presented. In the "Pottery Classroom," you can experience making pottery or painting using Echizen clay, as well as shaping pottery with an electric potter's wheel. With friendly guidance from staff, anyone can easily participate. You can freely create original works, such as tableware and vases. Additionally, in the adjacent "Echizen Ancient Kiln Museum," you can experience the charm of Echizen-yaki through tasting tea served in Echizen-yaki tea bowls, engaging all five senses.
