Details

Fukuoka Castle was built by the Warlord Kuroda Yoshitaka and his son Nagamasa over a period of seven years starting in 1601 during the Sengoku period. It is widely known as the residence of the Kuroda family, who ruled the Fukuoka domain during the Edo period, and is also referred to as "Maizuru Castle." It is said to be the largest castle in Kyushu, once featuring large, medium, and small tenshu (main keep) along with 47 turrets. The main area of the castle, consisting of Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru, covers 480,000 square meters and is designated as a national historic site. Currently preserved structures include the important cultural property Tamon Turret, the prefecturally designated Shiomi Turret, the Shimonohashi Gomon Gate, the old Momosato Taihei Nagaya Gate, and the city-designated Najima Gate, all of which are worth visiting. Today, the large tenshu platform is open to the public as an observation deck. From Honmaru to Sannomaru lies Maizuru Park, and the outer moat has been renovated into Ohori Park. Ohori Park is a popular recreational spot for citizens, often frequented by joggers and walkers. The park also features restaurants and cafes, and visitors can enjoy boating on the river. It is also a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, showcasing seasonal flowers throughout the year, making it a pleasant place for leisurely walks. Additionally, within the castle grounds, there is an exhibition hall for the "Kōrōkan," a facility for diplomacy and foreign trade from the Nara to Heian periods. The "Fukuoka Castle Exploration Hall," which provides insights into the history of Fukuoka Castle through ancient maps and recreated models, is also worth a visit.
