About Fukushima Ocean Science Museum
Experience the abundant sea of Fukushima with family and friends!
Details
The Fukushima Marine Science Museum, located near Onahama Port, is an aquarium that opened in 2000. The theme of the museum revolves around the "ocean current boundary" where the Kuroshio Current and the Oyashio Current converge, enriching the ecology of the Fukushima marine area.
The main exhibit in this aquarium is called "Tide Sea," where visitors can experience the ecology of the ocean current boundary formed by two large tanks through a triangular tunnel. It features Pacific saury and rare Oyashio marine life, and the "Oyashio Refrigerator," where you can see unique species found only here, is also a must-visit spot.
Another major highlight of the Fukushima Marine Science Museum is the environmental aquarium. In addition to the "Snake Eye Beach," where visitors can touch marine creatures, it also offers a fishing experience where participants can enjoy freshly caught fish on-site. There are also tanks where you can watch the feeding of spotted seals and sea lions, making for a variety of enriching experiences.
Highlights
The "Tidal Large Water Tank" symbolizes the "Tidal Sea" where the cold current of the Oyashio meets the warm current of the Kuroshio. It offers experiences such as "Fishing Experience," where you can enjoy the fish you catch on-site. There is also the "Snake Eye Beach," where you can go barefoot and interact with marine life. In front of the "Tidal Sea," there is a sushi restaurant where you can enjoy sushi while watching the fish swim leisurely. The facility also showcases unique creatures like the harbor seal (seasonal) that can only be seen here.
