About Ganchuntang East Store
Experience making wagashi at a long-established shop that has been in business since the Edo period.
Details
"Kanbundō" was established in 1865. It has a long-standing relationship with shrines and temples, having served as the traditional confectionery supplier for places like "Hōkoku Shrine" and "Old Rokujō Palace." It is a historic wagashi shop. The shop's signature item is the "Chajuki," shaped like a ceramic matcha bowl, along with seasonal namagashi and dry sweets.
"Kanbundō Higashiten" offers a wagashi-making experience. Participants can make four types of wagashi: namasatō, yōrōkō, nerikiri, and kintsuba. Skilled masters provide careful guidance, ensuring that anyone can participate with ease. Each month features a different theme, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves, allowing visitors to experience making various wagashi regardless of how many times they have attended. After the experience, participants can choose one of their creations to enjoy with matcha, while the remaining two can be taken home to savor.
There is also a tea house called "Sabō Tō," where demonstrations of wagashi-making by masters are held. The location is deeply connected to the Toyotomi family, situated in front of Hōkoku Shrine and near tourist attractions like "Kiyomizu-dera" and "Sanjūsangen-dō." It is recommended to include this precious experience of making wagashi in your Kyoto sightseeing itinerary.
