About Gangala Valley
The valley, where ancient people lived in caves and thick banyan tree forests, showcases the mysterious power of life.
Details
Located in the southern part of Okinawa Island, this valley was formed from the collapse of a limestone cave tens of thousands of years ago. The approximately 1-kilometer-long trail winds through a subtropical forest that has been nurtured over a long period, allowing visitors to fully experience the passage of time and the grandeur of nature.
Along the way, there are several valuable attractions, including a forest dense with subtropical plants, ongoing archaeological sites of ancient humans, and caves where locals have prayed for many children for centuries. The most famous among these is the "Oomatsu Banyan Tree" (大主榕樹), with its long aerial roots extending from the branches to the cliff, estimated to be around 150 years old. This towering tree, about 20 meters high, is also known as the lord of the forest. To visit the valley, participation in a guided tour is required, which must be reserved in advance, with a visit duration of about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Although there is a trail, there are stairs along the way, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes.
The starting point for the guided tour is a café located inside a natural limestone cave. It is exclusively for tour participants, serving as a resting place for travelers before their journey, and is also used for hosting concerts and private parties.
