Details
The Gassho Village Encounter Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans 107 meters, leading to the UNESCO World Heritage site of "Shirakawa-go Gassho-zukuri Village." This bridge connects the public parking lot "Murayama Stream Park Parking Lot," which facilitates tourism in Shirakawa-go, with the "Gassho-zukuri Village." Crossing the bridge brings you to the entrance of the village. The bridge stretches across the wide riverbed of the Shō River, offering pleasant views of the river from the bridge. The distance between the bridge deck and the river surface is not far, allowing visitors to feel the refreshing sensation of the crystal-clear waters of the Shō River as they cross.
Designed with a minimalist aesthetic to blend into the Gassho-zukuri village and its surrounding landscape, the bridge won the Outstanding Award at the 2003 Civil Engineering Society Design Awards. Made of concrete, the bridge may sway slightly when multiple people cross at the same time, providing a thrilling experience. As you enjoy the clear streams of the Shō River and the mountainous scenery, you can walk excitedly into the World Heritage village.
