About Ginza Sony Park

Sony has created a "park in the city" with innovative products.

Details

On January 26, 2025, "Ginza Sony Park," located in Tokyo's Ginza district, will grandly open. The Sony Building, constructed by Mr. Akio Morita, one of the founders of Sony, closed in 2017. As part of its redevelopment plan, it has been reborn as Ginza Sony Park. In the first phase, instead of immediately constructing a new building, an experimental approach was taken to transform the demolition process (from August 2018 to September 2021) into a park, attracting approximately 8.54 million visitors during that time. In the second phase, the demolition and new construction work resumed, with the final form officially completed in January 2025. The facility consists of five above-ground floors and four underground levels (the underground levels include mechanical rooms, etc.), perfectly embodying the design concept of "a park in the city." Its building height is only about half that of standard buildings in Ginza, intentionally adopting a lower structure to create more space in the densely built Ginza area, resulting in a brand-new landscape of open space and a sense of openness. The design concepts of the old Sony Building—"facilities open to the city," "Junction Architecture," and "Vertical Promenade"—are also continued in this new facility. There are no fixed commercial tenants within the facility; instead, each floor changes according to different themes over time, presenting a diverse range of activities and experiences. The high-ceilinged spaces on the above-ground floors and the open areas reserved throughout provide visitors with places for free walking and relaxation, truly realizing the concept of "a park in Ginza." Additionally, the third underground floor is planned as a "Casual Dining" level, offering a variety of culinary experiences that bring people a new and enjoyable dining experience. This brand-new park-like facility embodies the innovative spirit of Sony's historically groundbreaking products—such as the Walkman, PlayStation, and AIBO—making it another representative work of Sony's unique creativity.
