About Golden statue of Oda Nobunaga.
The statue of the hero "Oda Nobunaga" welcomes visitors in front of Gifu's main gate.
Details
The statue of the Sengoku warlord Oda Nobunaga stands in front of JR "Gifu" Station. Nobunaga used Gifu as his base to launch his campaign for unifying the country. It is said that the name "Gifu" was also given by Nobunaga.
The statue is located on the north side of the square named "Nobunaga Dream Plaza," in front of the station. Both the approximately 8-meter tall pedestal and the 3-meter tall statue itself are covered in three layers of gold leaf. From the pedestrian deck in front of the station, one can see the dazzling golden statue, which has become one of the symbols of Gifu City. Dressed in a cloak, he holds a gun traditionally said to have been brought from Tanegashima (now a remote island in Kagoshima Prefecture) in his right hand, and a Western-style helmet in his left hand. This appearance also showcases Nobunaga's early acceptance of Western culture.
The statue was erected in 2009 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Gifu City's establishment, funded by donations from citizens. When illuminated at night, it looks even more majestic.
