About Goryokaku Park
Goryokaku, which was once a strategic political location, is now a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
Details
Goryokaku is a Western-style fortress completed in the second year of the Keio era (1866). Before the Meiji government took over its management, it served as a political stronghold in the Ezo region. Later, in the third year of the Taisho era (1914), it was opened to the public as "Goryokaku Park," attracting numerous tourists as a sightseeing spot and a national special historic site.
The center of Goryokaku retains many remnants of early military fortifications. Facilities that evoke the atmosphere of war, such as cannons and granaries, still exist. There are currently two cannons, one made in England and the other a German cannon that was once mounted on the Meiji government warship "Asahi," which can be distinguished by their appearance.
Goryokaku Park is a famous spot for viewing various beautiful flowers, with the cherry blossom grove being the most renowned. The beauty of the cherry blossoms has nearly become synonymous with Goryokaku Park. The sight of approximately 1,530 cherry trees blooming simultaneously is breathtaking. Another highlight is the wisteria trellis. The wisteria blooms a little later than the cherry blossoms, creating a tunnel-like effect when in full bloom. Walking under the wisteria trellis is also highly recommended.
Highlights
Originally a political center in the Ezo region, it is now open to visitors as a tourist attraction. The area is filled with facilities and equipment that evoke the era of war. The wisteria trellis and cherry blossoms are must-see highlights, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the flowers that are said to represent the entrance to Goryokaku Park.
