"Hagi Meirin Gakusha" is Japan's largest wooden school building, constructed in 1935 on the site of the former Hagi domain educational institution "Hankō Meirinkan," which was established by the Meiji Restoration patriots. The main building is registered as a national tangible cultural property, preserving the rich atmosphere of learning from the past. The main building features an exhibition room and a tourist information center where visitors can learn about the history and culture of the Hagi area in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It also includes restored classrooms, the principal's office, and unique displays showcasing the architectural structure of the ceiling. Building No. 2 is divided into two areas: the "World Heritage Visitor Center" and the "Bakumatsu Museum." Here, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the "Meiji Japan Industrial Revolution Heritage" and the history of the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration, as well as the contributions of notable figures from the Chōshū domain, known as the "Chōshū Five," such as Inoue Kaoru and Ito Hirobumi. Building No. 3 features a citizen art gallery that is popular for promoting civic culture. Building No. 4 includes a co-working space that can be used for work vacations, remote work, and business trips. After a detailed visit, return to the main building to relax at "Cafe・Restaurant - Hagi Reki." In the warm atmosphere of the wooden school building, you can enjoy unique dishes made with local ingredients, such as "Hagi Gozen" or "Sweetfish Karaage Set," which are exclusive to this restaurant.
