About Hakata Machiya Folk Museum (Hakata Machiya Cultural Museum)
Introduce the charming culture of Hakata through precious exhibitions and traditional craft experiences.
Details
Hakata Machiya Folk Museum (Hakata Machiya Cultural Museum) is located opposite the "Kushida Shrine," famous for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Here, visitors can engage with the traditional life and culture of old Hakata, including festivals and traditional crafts.
The facility consists of three buildings: the Exhibition Hall, the Machiya Hall, and the Souvenir Shop. The Exhibition Hall features themed displays that introduce the history and culture of Hakata through images, models, and more. On the second floor, the Heritage Workshop allows visitors to observe the live production of Hakata dolls and Hakata paper crafts, and participate in experience courses for painting and making Hakata-style items, with different content available each day.
The Machiya Hall is a relocated and restored town house built in the mid-Meiji period, originally serving as both a residence and workshop for Hakata textile producers. In this grand Machiya, with its corridors and high ceilings, visitors can glimpse the lifestyle of that era. The various exhibits related to the traditional craft of "Hakataori," which was once presented to the shogunate, are not to be missed. Visitors can also watch artisans perform live demonstrations using precious handlooms, and a popular free hand-weaving experience is available.
The Souvenir Shop sells Hakata's famous sweets, traditional crafts, and original products from the Folk Museum. This location also serves as the starting point for guided tours led by volunteer guides that introduce nearby temples and shrines, making it a facility where visitors can experience the charm of Hakata through viewing, hands-on activities, and shopping.
Highlights
The Machiya building is registered as a designated cultural property of Fukuoka City. Non-visitors can also shop at the souvenir store, which offers many famous Hakata items, making it convenient to buy gifts. Across the street is Kushida Shrine, known for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, which is recommended to visit along with the hometown museum. Guided tours led by volunteer guides start daily at 2 PM (approximately 1 hour, free of charge).
