About Hakodate St. John's Church
The unique design in modern style is the church that initiated missionary activities in Hokkaido.
Details
In 1874, a British pastor named Denning came to Hakodate, a year after the abolition of the Christian ban, and built the "Hakodate St. John's Church" as a church of the Anglican Communion, primarily to carry out missionary activities in Hokkaido. Since then, the missionary directions of "education, relief for the poor, and medical care" were proposed by the missionary John Batchelor, known as the Father of the Ainu, and the Koroban couple, establishing the history of Sapporo.
The current church is the fifth generation, rebuilt after several major fires in Hakodate; it was completed in 1979, adhering to the belief of widely proclaiming divine grace, and features a cruciform design. Additionally, in 2006, the adjacent pastor's residence was completed and received the Hakodate City Urban Landscape Award.
Inside the church is a West German pipe organ, the first pipe organ installed in Hakodate, which brings profound emotion during the Sunday worship service that begins at 10:30 AM. It is said to have been installed to purify and deepen the hearts of passing tourists.
