About Hakone Open-Air Museum
Japan's first outdoor museum that integrates nature and art features around 120 sculptures scattered across its vast green landscape.
Details
The Hakone Open-Air Museum is Japan's first outdoor art museum, established in 1969, aimed at creating a display space that perfectly integrates art and nature. Covering an expansive area of 70,000 square meters, it showcases around 120 works by modern and contemporary sculptors, including masterpieces by art masters such as Rodin, Henry Moore, and Miró.
The outdoor sculpture exhibition area is the most attractive part of the museum. Here, visitors can closely appreciate the artworks, leisurely stroll among the sculptures to feel the romantic artistic atmosphere, and even pose for photos imitating the artworks (photography is allowed, but only for personal and non-commercial use). There are also plenty of opportunities to explore various art pieces, making it a family-friendly destination with many areas suitable for children to play.
Inside the Hakone Open-Air Museum, there is also the "Picasso Pavilion," which is one of the museums with the largest collection of Picasso's works in the world. Centered around 188 ceramic works, it exhibits a rich variety of pieces including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, stained glass, and silverware.
Additionally, if you get tired from walking, there is a free foot bath available. Visitors can enjoy a foot bath using natural hot spring water while appreciating the surrounding artworks, providing a healing experience.
After the visit, you can dine or shop within the museum. There is a café offering light meals, a self-service restaurant, and a gourmet restaurant with an open kitchen, as well as relaxation areas. The official souvenir shop has a wide range of products, from original museum merchandise to handmade jewelry by artists and art books. It also offers local specialties from Hakone, making it a great choice for picking up gifts.
