About Hanazono Jinja Shrine, Shinjuku, Tokyo (東京新宿鎮座 花園神社)

A shrine that quietly watches over the bustling city of Shinjuku.

Details

Hanaen Shrine has long been revered by the local community as the guardian deity of Shinjuku. Even today, it quietly resides among the bustling shopping malls and restaurants that are densely packed in the urban streets. During the Edo period, the shrine's main hall was destroyed by fire multiple times, prompting the shrine to establish a theater in its courtyard to raise funds for reconstruction. This theater hosted popular events such as juggling, plays, and dances that were well-received by the public. Each year in November, the shrine holds the "Tori no Ichi" festival, where visitors can enjoy traditional performances and various street stalls featuring acts that are rare to see at other times. Within the shrine grounds, the "Geinou Asama Shrine" attracts many figures from Japan's entertainment industry and celebrities who come to pay their respects each year.

Highlights

The “Yasaka Shrine” that worships the god of arts is hidden within the bustling city, filled with mystery. Each year, up to 600,000 people attend the "Tori no Ichi" event in November.
