⛩️ Hancham Shrine (Ukibune Shrine)
🎨 Shrine Gallery
📝 Introduction
Standing by the shores of Lake Tazawa is a mysterious shrine dedicated to the legend of Princess Tatsuko.
📖 Details
The Hancha Shrine, also known as "Floating Wood Shrine," is said to have been named by the haiku poet Masuto Sōzō from the Akita domain in the 6th year of the Meiwa era (1769). The shrine enshrines driftwood that has washed ashore, which is why it has this alternative name.
Standing on the surface of Lake Tazawa, the shrine appears to float on the lake from a distance, creating a mysterious sight. The shrine building, made of white wood, contrasts beautifully with the clear blue lake water and the lush greenery surrounding the shrine, deeply attracting the attention of visitors.
The main deity enshrined here is Tsubaki, from the "Tsubaki-hime Legend" associated with Lake Tazawa. The local love story between Hachirotarō, the dragon god of Hachirogata, and Tsubaki, the lake goddess of Lake Tazawa, is quite famous as a deity of marriage. Visitors can also purchase marriage amulets, Tsubaki amulets, and goshuin (temple stamps). Near the shrine, there is a "Tsubaki statue" that can be visited as well.
Next to the shrine, fish bait is sold, and when thrown into the lake, it attracts a large number of "Hakone Sanji Gyaru fish," which has become one of the local specialties.
⭐ Highlights
Due to the worship of the driftwood, it is also known as "Driftwood Shrine" (浮木神社). The deity enshrined is "Tatsuko" from the legend of Tatsuko-hime. It is revered as the god of connections, attracting many visitors for worship. You can also sprinkle bait to feed the fish.
