🗺️ Harmonica Yokocho (ハモニカ横丁)

Exiting the north exit of 「吉祥寺」(Kichijoji) Station, you will find a narrow shopping street. This small alley is home to about 100 shops, commonly known as 「口琴橫丁」 (Harmonica Yokocho). The small shops stand closely together, resembling the arrangement of reeds in a harmonica, which is how it got its name. During the day, you can find clothing stores, as well as many wagashi (Japanese sweets) shops and snack stalls, perfect for enjoying a bite while strolling around. When the red lanterns start to glow in the evening, the shopping street becomes bustling with patrons heading to izakayas (Japanese pubs) for drinks, creating a lively atmosphere. There are retro izakayas with plenty of charm, alongside trendy new bars, showcasing a vibrant blend of nostalgic and contemporary styles. It’s a great spot to wander around the alleys casually or to pick a favorite shop to experience Japanese izakaya culture.

In the evening, the shopping street is lit up with hanging red lanterns, and the crowds flock to the izakaya for drinks. An early market is held on the third Sunday of every month (from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM). You can experience the nostalgic atmosphere of Japan.
