About Hōbaku Park
A rare urban seaside park in Japan, where you can enjoy flower viewing, sports, and swimming in the sea.
Details
Located a 20-minute bus ride from JR Aomori Station, Gappo Park, facing Aomori Port, is one of the few urban seaside parks in Japan. Built with personal funds by Suigen Eisaku and the Kakizaki brothers, it was completed in the 27th year of the Meiji era (1894) and later donated to Aomori City.
Covering an area of 17 hectares, the park features approximately 670 cherry blossom trees, primarily of the Somei Yoshino variety, attracting many citizens for hanami (flower viewing) in spring. In summer, the park boasts a spacious beach area that draws large numbers of family visitors, creating a lively atmosphere. The park also includes sports facilities such as Aomori City Baseball Stadium, tennis courts, and jogging tracks, as well as a petting zoo with small animals and birds, a playground, and a tea house, making it a beloved recreational spot for locals.
The park is also famous for its numerous stone monuments. There are 31 monuments in total, including haiku stones by Matsuo Bashō and others, a monument commemorating the first complete game in Japanese professional baseball at Aomori City Baseball Stadium, and a bronze bust, providing an enjoyable experience as visitors stroll and admire them.
